1875: Grand Central Depot

The Grand Central Depot was built by Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1871 on the site we know today as Grand Central Terminal. At the time, it was the largest interior space in the entire nation and was a central nexus point for the city’s various railroad lines extending throughout Manhattan, Harlem all the way up to New Haven, Connecticut.
